‘Resilience’ is a word we hear often in tourism, but it’s not always easy to define in practical terms.
In recent years, our industry has faced pandemics, floods, fires, supply chain disruption, rising costs and shifting traveller expectations.
The businesses and destinations that respond well are not simply lucky. They tend to have strong systems, clear responsibilities and the right skills in place to make decisions under pressure.
This was a strong theme at the PATA Annual Summit 2026, where tourism leaders explored what it means to build a more responsible and resilient future for the sector.

At the Summit, our Principal Consultant – Destinations, Strategy & Insights, Dr Natasha Montesalvo, joined a fireside chat with TTG Asia to discuss the role of ESG in tourism and the launch of PATA’s new Micro-Credentials Program.
As part of this program, Natasha and our Chief Sustainability Officer, Dr Steve Newman, have developed an ESG sustainability course designed to help tourism professionals build knowledge they can apply at their own pace.
For small and medium tourism businesses, ESG can still feel like a big and complex area. Where do you start? What matters most? What information are partners asking for? How do you respond to Scope 3 emissions requests, data disclosures and policy requirements in a way that is realistic for your organisation?
The new ESG micro-learning course was created to help answer those questions, translating complex expectations into practical steps for tourism professionals.
As the sector continues to change, capability building will be central to long-term resilience. We are proud to see Natasha and Steve contributing to this important work with PATA and helping make ESG learning more accessible across the tourism community.
