Day Trips Near Estes Park

A stay in Estes Park makes it easy to experience more of Colorado without packing up and changing hotels every night. From here, you can head into Rocky Mountain National Park and across Trail Ridge Road (when it’s open) or explore nearby small mountain towns that are all within a comfortable day trip.

Why Estes Park is a Great Base for Day Trips

Estes Park works well as a home base thanks to its location right next to RMNP and its access to scenic routes that branch out across northern Colorado. You can see a lot without spending hours on the road. Our lodgings range from hotels and motels to cabins and full-service resorts, giving you plenty of options to stay in one place while exploring nearby destinations during the day. Staying overnight in Estes Park also keeps you close to restaurants, shops, services and everything else you might need in between outings.

Rocky Mountain National Park Day Adventures

RMNP belongs at the top of the list while you’re here. With multiple park entrances right near town, it’s easy to get to some of the most popular areas quickly. Bear Lake Road is a great place to start. It serves as a gateway to scenic lakes, meadows, hiking trails and some of the best wildlife viewing areas in the park.

If you’re up for a scenic seasonal drive, Trail Ridge Road is hard to beat. Typically closed to through traffic from mid-October to the last week of May or early June, this 48-mile route climbs to 12,183 feet and connects Estes Park to Grand Lake when it’s fully open. Along the way, you’ll pass alpine landscapes, scenic overlooks, and expansive views above the treeline. It’s one of those drives you won’t forget.

Keep in mind that an entry fee or park pass is required to enter RMNP. Timed-entry reservations may apply at certain times of the year, so you should check current park requirements before heading out.

Scenic and Nearby Towns for Day Trips

Grand Lake is a rewarding stop if you’re looking for a classic lakeside mountain town experience. The historic downtown boardwalk is lined with shops, restaurants and local businesses, all within walking distance of the lake. When Trail Ridge Road is open, the drive between Estes Park and Grand Lake becomes one of the most memorable scenic day trips in Colorado.

Highway 7 offers another beautiful route south of town. The road forms part of the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway and passes several well-known stops along the way. Lily Lake, just outside town, delivers mountain views and a walking trail. Continue a bit farther south, and you’ll reach Allenspark, a small mountain community located near the Wild Basin entrance of RMNP.

On another route, Lyons rests at the confluence of North and South St. Vrain creeks, with parks, river access and locally owned businesses found throughout town. Five minutes from downtown, LaVern Johnson Park provides river access during the summer, a playground and a splash pad, making Lyons a popular stop for families.

Easy Half-Day Trips for Families

If you’re looking for something shorter, there are plenty of nearby spots that still deliver big on scenery and outdoor fun. One option is Sprague Lake inside RMNP, where a short loop trail circles the shoreline and picnic areas create space to pause and enjoy the scenery.

About an hour south of Estes Park, Nederland is a charming mountain town with shops, cafes, restaurants and a hiking trail around Barker Meadow Reservoir. Families can stroll the shoreline trail and explore the small downtown area or relax by the water.

Around 50 minutes south of Estes Park, the Brainard Lake Recreation Area provides classic subalpine forest views. Enjoying outdoor recreation at the lake, such as hiking, biking and taking in jaw-dropping mountain views, makes it well-suited for a half-day family outing.

Please note: visitors must obtain a timed-entry reservation for vehicle access to Brainard Lake Recreation Area.

Planning Tips & Drive Times to Consider

Seasonal road conditions play an important role when you’re planning these day trips. Trail Ridge Road closes to through traffic during winter due to snow and high-elevation conditions. This closure usually occurs from mid-October to the last week of May or early June. The drive between Estes Park and Grand Lake is possible only during months when the road is open.

Park access rules may also vary and can affect your travel plans. RMNP requires an entrance fee or pass and may require timed-entry reservations. Checking current conditions before leaving town will help you avoid delays.

If you’d prefer to keep drive times shorter, nearby spots like Lyons, Allenspark or Lily Lake are all easy to reach and well worth a visit.
