10 Buffet Habits That Will Get You Banned (or Sick)

Buffet etiquette on a cruise is actually a bigger deal than a lot of people realize.

It is not just about being polite. Some habits are flat-out gross.

Some can make other passengers sick, and a few can get crew members involved, especially if someone keeps doing them after being told to stop.

Cruise lines take food safety seriously for a reason.

One bad passenger habit can ruin a meal for dozens of people. In some cases, it can mess up an entire sailing.

So here are 10 buffet habits that can get a cruiser into real trouble, or at the very least make everybody around them wish they had gone to the main dining room instead.

1. Using bare hands to grab food

This is probably the fastest way to make everyone around lose their appetite.

Buffets have tongs, spoons, ladles, serving forks, all for a reason. Reaching in with bare fingers to grab bacon, bread, cookies, fruit, or anything else is a huge no.

Even if those hands look clean, nobody knows where they have been.

Pool railing. Elevator buttons. Phone screen. Cabin bathroom door. Not exactly what anyone wants mixed into the salad station.

On a cruise, where illnesses can spread faster than people think, this kind of thing gets noticed.

Crew will usually step in right away, and if someone acts rude or keeps doing it, that can turn into a much bigger problem than expected.

2. Licking fingers and then touching the serving utensils

This one is honestly worse than the first.

Some people grab food, lick sauce or crumbs off their fingers, then go right back to the buffet line and touch the spoon handle as if nothing happened.

It’s nasty. There is really no softer word for it.

Cruise buffets are constantly being monitored, and food handling is one of the things staff watch very closely.

Nobody is probably getting banned because of one awkward little mistake, obviously, but doing stuff like this repeatedly can absolutely get a passenger reported.

3. Reusing the same dirty plate for a second trip

Plate at the buffet

This one seems harmless to some cruisers, but it is a hygiene issue.

A plate that has already touched half-eaten food, used utensils, sauces, and whatever else should not be going back into the buffet line.

That old plate can easily touch serving spoons, drip onto counters, or contaminate clean areas.

Crew members on many ships will actually stop passengers and ask them to grab a fresh plate. Some people get weirdly defensive about it too, which never helps.

4. Coughing or sneezing over the food

This should not need explaining, and yet here we are.

If someone coughs, sneezes, or even leans way too close over open food trays, it can become a serious issue instantly.

Especially during norovirus season, or anytime there is concern about illness onboard.

Cruise lines are extremely sensitive to anything that could spread germs in food service areas.

If a passenger is visibly sick and still wandering around the buffet touching things, staff may step in, ask questions, or even send them for medical evaluation depending on the situation.

5. Letting kids serve themselves with no supervision

Kids at the buffet can be adorable for about six seconds.

After that, if nobody is watching them, it can become a total playground.

It’s usually not the kid’s fault, really. That is on the adults.

Cruise crew are usually patient, but if parents keep ignoring warnings while their kids make a mess or create a hygiene problem, staff can absolutely step in and speak to them.

And if the adults respond badly, they can absolutely get a warning.

6. Cutting the line or reaching across people

This will not usually get someone sick, but it can definitely get someone into trouble.

Cruise buffets can be crowded, especially on sea days and embarkation day.

Everybody is hungry, and patience starts disappearing quickly.

Trying to squeeze in front of others or barging into the line is a great way to start an argument.

If staff has to break up a confrontation and one passenger gets aggressive, rude, or abusive, that can lead to serious consequences.

Cruise lines don’t mess around much when behavior starts affecting other guests, and bans for brawls are very common.

7. Taking food into unsanitary places, then bringing it back

Someone grabs buffet food, takes it into a bathroom area, sets the plate on some random surface, then walks back out and returns to the buffet for more.

Or they leave food unattended in a questionable place and come back still carrying the same plate.

That is not just gross, it is a contamination risk.

On a cruise ship, where cleanliness matters a lot more because thousands of people are sharing the same space, staff are trained to watch for stuff like this.

If food has been taken somewhere inappropriate, it should not be brought back into the serving area. Period.

8. Hoarding food like the buffet is closing forever

Food waste at the buffet

Nobody likes a food hog. Loading up ten desserts, six slices of pizza, three burgers, and a mountain of fruit just to leave most of it untouched is already annoying.

But on a cruise buffet, it can also create problems when popular items run out, and half the dining room is left staring at an empty tray.

Cruise lines usually will not ban someone for wasting food, but if a passenger is aggressively hoarding, taking food meant for group service, or fighting with staff over portions, things can get ugly.

9. Ignoring hand washing stations on purpose

A lot of cruise lines have crew standing right at the buffet entrance, encouraging passengers to wash or sanitize their hands before entering.

There is a reason for that. On some ships, the hand-washing routine is almost impossible to miss.

This is one of the easiest cruise rules to follow, and also one of the dumbest ones to ignore.

But many people still ignore it and walk right past the sinks like it’s nothing.

10. Going to the buffet while clearly sick

This is the last and big one. If someone has vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or obvious signs of being ill and still decides to wander into the buffet because they “just want something small,” that is a serious problem.

Cruise ships are very strict about illness reporting for a reason. If a sick passenger touches utensils or stands near open food, they can expose a huge number of people.

In some cases, cruise lines may confine sick passengers to their cabins for public health reasons.

And if someone hides symptoms, breaks the rules, or keeps going out in public spaces after being instructed not to, the consequences can get severe.
