- Projection of over 44 million travelers screened between late December and early January
- Elimination of the shoe removal requirement for domestic passengers at security checkpoints
- Introduction of specialized screening lanes for families and military service members

The Transportation Security Administration is actively preparing for an unprecedented volume of passengers during the upcoming holiday season, aiming to conclude a record-setting year for air travel. Between December 19, 2025, and January 4, 2026, the agency anticipates screening approximately 44.3 million individuals at checkpoints across the United States. The busiest single day is projected to be Sunday, December 28, with volume expected to reach 2.86 million travelers. This surge in activity follows a series of strategic improvements designed to streamline security procedures and enhance convenience for the public.
Under the direction of DHS Secretary Noem, several significant policy changes have been implemented to facilitate smoother processing. A notable shift includes the removal of the requirement for domestic passengers to take off their shoes during standard screening. Additionally, the agency has focused on specific traveler groups through new initiatives. The “Families on the Fly” campaign has introduced dedicated lanes at select airports to assist parents and children, while the “Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease” program offers expedited lanes and cost-saving benefits to military personnel and their families.
Regarding identification standards, the TSA enforced the REAL ID Act earlier this year. Looking ahead to February 2026, travelers without acceptable identification will have the option to use “TSA ConfirmID” for a fee. Currently, the agency is also incentivizing enrollment in its expedited screening program by offering discounts for joint sign-ups through the end of the year. These operational adjustments reflect a broader effort to modernize airport security and accommodate the growing demand for air travel.
