All cruise ships that visit U.S. ports are given unannounced inspections twice a year. All areas of the ships are inspected that include potable water, pools, hot tubs, kitchens and galleys, and public spaces on board.

A score of 86 or higher is required to pass. Points are deducted when there is a pattern of similar violations or if there is a single, significant violation.

The last cruise ship to score a perfect 100 was Carnival Magic. The report has deficiencies listed like the light intensity surrounding one of the ice machines and yogurt stations measured less than 220 lux. Since this is a minor violation, no points were deducted.

If you want to see the latest score and report for your next cruise ship, you can find it on the CDC’s Advanced Cruise Ship Inspection Search.

Reports are listed on the CDC’s website a few weeks after each inspection.
