In this article, we will look at Mount Longonot National Park entry fees. Mount Longonot National Park is a magical hidden gem of Kenya, located in the Great Rift Valley southeast of Lake Naivasha. The park is situated approximately 60 kilometres north-west of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. The park covers 52 square kilometres, most of which is occupied by Mt. Longonot, a young volcano that is thought to have last erupted in the 1860s.

Mt. Longonot is one of those achievable destinations over a weekend from Nairobi and also attainable for a novice hiker. Its name is derived from the Maasai word Oloonong’ot, meaning “mountains of many spurs” or “steep ridges.”. The sides of the mountain have beautiful V-shaped valleys and ridges. The stony soils have little vegetation, but the crater has an impenetrable forest. The park is famous for its amazing scenic views created by the mountain and its crater with a forested floor.

A forest of small trees covers the crater floor, and small steam vents are found spaced around the walls of the crater. Mount Longonot National Park is home to a reasonable number of wildlife species; they live both inside the forested crater and in the short grass regions of the park. These animals include plains zebras, giraffes, Thomson’s gazelles, buffaloes, hartebeests, antelopes, baboons, leopards, bushbucks, Grant’s gazelles, eland impalas, and many more. The park is also home to over 100 species of birds, which live in various vegetation covers. These birds include Verreaux’s Eagle, Lammergeier, Common Ostrich, Fulvous Whistling Duck, Egyptian Goose, Helmeted Guinea Fowl, Scaly Francolin, Speckled Pigeon, Red-eyed Dove, Mottled Swift, Common Swift, and Nyanza Swift, among others.

Mount Longonot National Park Activities

Tourists can participate in the following activities during their visit to Mount Longonot National Park:

1. Game viewing

Mount Longonot National Park is not known for having a large animal population, but the animals that live there make a wildlife viewing safari worthwhile. A wildlife viewing expedition in the park allows you to see animals as you hike up to the rim of the crater and inside the forested crater floor. Buffalo, zebras, antelopes, baboons, leopards, bushbucks, Grant’s gazelles, eland, hartebeests, and other animals have been spotted in the park.

2. Bird watching

The park has been recognised as one of the most important birding areas and a bird-watcher’s paradise in Kenya’s Rift Valley region. The park is partly forested, making it an ideal habitat for Rift Valley birds. Verreaux’s Eagle, Lammergeier, Common Ostrich, Fulvous Whistling Duck, Egyptian Goose, helmeted guinea fowl, scaly francolin, Speckled Pigeon, Red-eyed Dove, Mottled Swift, Common Swift, Nyanza Swift, and many other birds can be seen while birdwatching.

3. Hiking

This activity entails hiking to the rim of the mountain top and navigating through the rigged forested terrain. The entire hike to and around the caldera takes about 4–5 hours and is an unforgettable experience. Hike 3.1 kilometres from the park’s main entrance gate. This activity is both entertaining and challenging as you hike through the volcano’s steep and rocky sides while admiring the amazing scenery of the crater, whose floor is covered by forests and sights of the surroundings.

4. Sightseeing

Beautiful views of Lake Naivasha, the small forest, and the Nakuru surroundings await you atop the peak and crater. While you are up there, you will also see several birds and animals, as well as many other park features.

5. Biking

Biking excursions can be taken on the rocky areas of the mountain and around the park for an adventure and fun experience. This activity takes place on a 2-kilometre circuit road that leads to the volcanic lava flow.
