To Get There
The Mambrui Sand Dunes are located approximately 50 minutes away from Malindi town. It is best to use a tuk-tuk or boda boda to get there, as the dunes are quite a distance from the main road. The tuk-tuk ride will cost you about Ksh 600 to and from.
Mambrui Sand Dunes
A fascinating sandy beach with massive dunes that resemble a desert. The sand is glittery gold and from a distance, it looks like the dunes are striped in a mixture of fawn and black. Unlike other beaches in the south and Mombasa sides, here the sand is very fine and constantly blown by the wind, like in a desert. Be prepared to pay a small fee to the local self-appointed community guides who charge you to see the place and support their local community, as they don’t have jobs. As with everything else in Kenya, you can negotiate the fees, especially as they may view you as a tourist from Nairobi or Bara, as they call it. Of course, the ‘mzungu’ price will be different.
The guides are friendly and will show you around, and also take care of your belongings if you want to take a dip in the ocean. However, some boda boda guys often pass by the beach as part of their daily route and may pick up your stuff and ride away.
You’ll enjoy amazing, almost endless views of the sand dunes. If you have a drone, you can take spectacular pictures here. The sand dunes lead you to the beach, providing an opportunity to cool down after trekking in the sand. The only downside is that there is no refreshment spot nearby, so you have to carry your drinks if you plan to stay for more than an hour. Mambrui Sand Dunes Entry Fees
Upon arrival at the gate, you will be greeted by a small welcoming party who are very friendly and entertaining. You will be welcomed to “Little Dubai,” as the locals call it, and then you will be given traditional Arab scarves called Arafats for Ksh 100 each. It’s advisable to bring sunglasses because the wind and sun can easily get into your eyes. Also, remember to wear sandals, as they make it easier to walk on the sand.
The entry fee is Ksh 200 per person, and the guide fee is Ksh 500. On Saturdays and Sundays, they offer cool quad bike rides for Ksh 1,000 for 5 minutes or Ksh 2,000 for 20 minutes.
