Madera County Holds Fourth Battle of the Books

MADERA — Over 200 Students from across 17 schools gathered Tuesday at the Madera Fairgrounds for the fourth annual Madera County Battle of the Books. This event challenged teams to showcase their reading skills and teamwork through a series of exciting competitions.

Top Performers Shine

The Word Wizards from North Fork Elementary proudly celebrate their achievements at the Battle of the Books.

After the main events, the top three teams competed in a high-stakes Grand Challenge. The Bookshelf Bandits from Reagan Elementary School dominated the 3rd-4th grade competition, claiming first place overall. In second overall came the Soaring Eagles from Oakhurst Elementary School, followed by The Reading Crew from Liberty Charter School in third.

Moreover, The Tale of the Fairmead Warriors from Fairmead Elementary School triumphed in the 5th-6th grade division, finishing in first place.  Following, the Reading Ravens from Sherman Thomas STEM Academy placed second, and the Word Wizards from North Fork Elementary School came in third.

Event Highlights

  • Friendly Family Feud:
    Teams answered book-related questions one at a time. Incorrect answers gave the opposing team a chance to steal points.
    • 3rd-4th Grade Winners: 1st Bookshelf Bandits, 2nd Soaring Eagles, 3rd Rockin’ Readers (North Fork Elementary School)
    • 5th-6th Grade Winners: 1st Reading Ravens, 2nd Word Wizards, 3rd The Tale of the Fairmead Warriors
  • Relay Race:
    Students ran to answer questions individually. The race ended after one team completed all 24 questions.
    • 3rd-4th Grade Winners: 1st The Reading Crew, 2nd Soaring Eagles, 3rd Bookshelf Bandits.
    • 5th-6th Grade Winners: 1st The Tale of the Fairmead Warriors, 2nd Reading Ravens, 3rd Word Wizards.
  • Super Challenge:
    All teams competed in a fast-paced buzzer round. The quickest team to buzz in and answer correctly earned points.

A Day of Fun & Learning

Importantly, the Madera County Superintendent of Schools and Madera County Schools Foundation hosted this event, encouraging teamwork, reading, and sportsmanship. Deputy Superintendent Tricia Protzman praised the students for their hard work and enthusiasm.

“It was a fierce competition and the students did an amazing job demonstrating their book knowledge and sportsmanship,” she said.

Protzman continued, “It was such an exciting day, with fun team competitions, challenges, and collaboration.”

Overall, the Battle of the Books continues to grow each year, bringing together young readers to celebrate their shared love of books and learning.
