Kelvedon Boat Shed is a must-see location for anyone travelling the East Coast of Tasmania. Its aesthetic has made it the most photographed building along this stretch of road, or even all of the East Coast.
Most tourists will stop for a photo and move on, but if you have time, you could consider spending 30 to 60 minutes here and taking in the surrounding scenery. There’s more to it than just the boat shed.

The Boat Shed
You’ve got the boat shed, and then you’ve got everything else. And by everything else, I mean surfers, a beach full of sea shells, and a nearby vineyard, Kelvedon Estate.
I only had time for a few photos and a brief beach exploration when I last visited. The sun was breaking through the clouds nearby and I had been wanting to capture a picture of the location for several years, but had never passed through with good weather. Today was my day. I was surprised to find some surfers out at the point, a variety of shells washed onto shore, and no one else in site. If I had the time, I would have spent a little longer here taking in the beauty of Tasmania.
A few minutes passed, I captured my image and was on the road again. Months later I discovered that just across the road was a small vineyard called Kelvedon Estate.
Kelvedon Estate
Kelvedon Estate has been into Viticulture since 1998. The family began with a single hectare and has since expanded to 9 hectares during full production, in which half of the produced vintage is bottled under their own label and can be found in Tasmanian restaurants and bottle shops. I’m yet to try anything from their collection.

If you’re travelling along the Great Eastern Drive to or from Freycinet, you have no reason not to stop and check out the views. I’d highly recommend stopping by, and grabbing a photo of this famous boat shed before moving along – all of 5-10 minutes detour from your holiday.

Yes, there is parking at Kelvedon Boat Shed. Parking is on the ocean side of the road in two locations. One is closer to the boat shed, and the other is a gravel car park closer to Kelvedon Estate. Best to use Google Maps to make sure you don’t drive past.
