Jersey Mike’s Subs has named Betsy Mercado as its first chief people officer, the company announced Monday.

Mercado will be responsible for leading the sandwich chain’s human resources and talent development strategies. Her role will focus on leadership development, compliance and the overall employee experience as the company continues to expand.

“Betsy brings an exceptional combination of franchise expertise, strategic vision and a genuine passion for developing people,” Jersey Mike’s CEO Charlie Morrison said in a press release. “Her leadership will be instrumental in strengthening and supporting our team members and ensuring we preserve the authentic Jersey Mike’s culture as we scale nationally and globally.”

Mercado has more than two decades of human resources experience in the restaurant and franchise industries. She previously served as chief people officer at Flynn Group, which operates more than 2,700 restaurants and fitness clubs nationwide.

Before her time at Flynn Group, Mercado was the vice president of human resources for The Palm Restaurants.

“I’m energized to build on that legacy, strengthening the foundation already in place while shaping the future of people development at the company,” Mercado said.

Founded in 1956, Jersey Mike’s has grown to more than 3,000 locations in the U.S. and Canada.
