NORTH FORKā€“Each year the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway Association offers opportunities for people to learn more about the local mountain area by scheduling free tours along the Scenic Byway. This year you can join the tour of the second stop on the Byway, the historic Jesse Ross cabin. Connie Popelish, retired District Archeologist for the Sierra National Forest, will conduct the tour. She led the Forest Service project that moved and restored the Ross Cabin in 1991.

If you would like to learn more about the efforts to preserve the Ross Cabin, and the history of Jesse Ross and his homestead, meet the group at the North Fork Community Development Council offices (on the old North Fork Mill site) at 9:00 am to view a 10-minute video of that project, and then continue up the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway to the Ross cabin (about a 25-minute drive). It is a short hike of 150 yards from the parking area to the cabin where Connie will give the history of the Ross family and how Jesse Ross came to build his homestead in the mountains above North Fork.

Then the tour will continue up the Byway for another half mile to the original location of the cabin and the graves of Jesse Ross, his daughter, Julia Bell, and her husband Frank Hallock on what is now the NOMA Resort.

Bring water, your lunch, and good walking shoes.Ā

The owners of the Noma Resort will give us a short tour of the property and we will picnic at one of the ponds they have developed.

When: Saturday, August 31, 2024
Where: Meet at the CDC Office at Old Mill Site Conference Room in North Fork
