An event that promises to be both inspiring and exhilarating is set to unfold at Rocky’s Backyard Ultra Race. Clara Woods, an extraordinary artist who has defied the odds to express herself through vibrant and impactful artwork, is teaming up with Joshua Stevens, an ultra-runner who has made a career out of defying expectations. Together, they are lending their talents to spotlight the Inclusion Matters Movement, a cause focused on ensuring everyone, regardless of abilities or limitations, feels included and valued.

Meet Clara Woods

Born with a perinatal stroke that left her unable to speak or write, Clara Woods found her voice through art. Her canvases speak volumes about resilience, joy, and the beauty found in life’s complexities. Clara’s work has been showcased internationally, touching the hearts of many who see her art as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Through her Inclusion Matters Movement, Clara is on a mission to create a world where everyone is valued, and differences are celebrated.

About Joshua Stevens

Joshua Stevens is no stranger to challenging the boundaries of possibility. In 2011, doctors told him he would never run again after enduring a second cervical spinal cord surgery to repair wounds he received during combat operations in Iraq. After a four-year hiatus from racing, Joshua came across Clara’s Instagram profile and felt something deep within him reignite. Inspired by Clara’s story and her movement, Joshua decided to run again—this time for Clara. Joshua will compete in Rocky’s Backyard Ultra Race in Estes Park, Colorado, on October 5th, 2024.

The Inclusion Matters Movement

The Inclusion Matters Movement underscores the importance of creating environments where everyone feels valued and included. By championing this cause at Rocky’s Backyard Ultra, Clara and Joshua are advocating for a culture of acceptance and support that transcends physical and cognitive limitations.

Rocky’s Backyard Ultra Race

Rocky’s Backyard Ultra is held in, you guessed it, the Rocky Mountains. The race consists of a 4.167-mile trail loop set on the YMCA of the Rockies campus, bordering Rocky Mountain National Park. This backdrop attracts runners from around the world, eager to face the mental and physical challenge of completing the course every hour, on the hour, until only one runner remains.

Participants who complete 100 miles will receive custom-designed belt buckles, and the ultimate winner will walk away with a $1,000 cash prize. However, this race has always been about much more than medals and money. It’s about the spirit of endurance and the commitment to pushing beyond personal limits—a mindset shared by both Clara Woods and Joshua Stevens.

The Inclusion Matters Movement will feature prominently throughout the day, with special art exhibits, motivational talks, and an interactive booth where attendees can learn more about how to contribute to a more inclusive world.
