Lake Mead National Recreation Area to Reopen Popular Trails This Fall

On Tuesday, October 1, Lake Mead National Recreation Area will reopen a number of popular trails that were closed for the summer to protect visitors during high temperatures. This is an annual closure, though in 2024, it was particularly important because of extreme heat. Lake Mead Recreation Area saw record heat this summer, with three days soaring to over 110 degrees. Normally, highs near Lake Mead reach 105 degrees in the peak of afternoon summertime heat. 

The trails reopening include:

• Goldstrike Canyon
• White Rock Canyon and White Rock Canyon Trail
• Arizona Hot Springs and Arizona Hot Springs Trail
• Liberty Arch Trail
• Lone Palm Trail
• Sugar Loaf Trail
• Surrounding areas of Lone Palm and Sugar Loaf

While cooler temperatures offer more comfortable hiking conditions, visitors should still take precautions to stay safe. Follow these tips for a safe and enjoyable visit:

1. Hike Early – Start your hike in the early morning when temperatures are cooler.
2. Stay Hydrated – Carry plenty of water and salty snacks.
3. Know Your Route – Familiarize yourself with trail distances and terrain.
4. Limit Activity – Keep hikes short to avoid overexertion.
5. Pack Smart – Wear appropriate clothing, and bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.

Goldstrike Canyon Restoration Event:In conjunction with the trails reopening, community members are invited to join Lake Mead National Recreation Area staff for a restoration event at Goldstrike Canyon Trail.
