MODESTODoctors Medical Center (DMC) recently received two recognitions from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and one from the American College of Cardiology. DMC was reverified as a Level II Trauma Center by the ACS. DMC holds the distinction as the region’s first Level II Verified Trauma Center in 2008. It has held that designation since then. Separately, DMC also received the Diamond Designation for being a Surgical Quality Partner in ACS quality programs. Also, the American College of Cardiology recognized DMC with the Platinum Performance Achievement Award for the quality of its Heart Attack treatments.

“As a Level II Trauma Center, we have the complex clinical expertise and surgical and interventional capabilities needed to take care of the most severely injured, and perform lifesaving surgeries,” said Dr. Rohini Bogineni, Chief of Staff and Trauma Medical Director at DMC.

Dr. Bogineni continues, “The advanced and expansive capabilities of our Emergency Department and Trauma Center allows DMC to help patients in our local and regional communities and to serve as a true regional resource.”

The DMC Trauma Center is an important resource for the region. This is because it provides a higher level of care for transfer patients from rural and community hospitals. The DMC Trauma Center serves over 1.7 million people from six counties:

  • Calaveras County
  • Mariposa County
  • Merced County
  • San Joaquin County
  • Stanislaus County
  • Tuolumne County

The Trauma Center was the ninth hospital to join the ACS’ Trauma Quality Improvement Program that now has 900 trauma centers participating across the United States.

Being verified as a Level II Trauma Center means that DMC has again met the ACS’ rigorous standards. These include specialty-trained staff and equipment that are necessary to provide 24-hour emergency care. This involves having board-certified emergency surgeons and anesthesiologists on hand. In order to be reverified as a Level II Trauma Center, Doctors Medical Center was required to demonstrate the availability of specialized equipment and sub-specialties to care for critically injured patients who may have multiple injuries. Level II signals that, with the exception of cases of severe burn, all trauma patients can be treated at DMC.

“Our surgeons and staff have always supported the trauma program at the hospital. All of the physician specialties, nursing, ancillary, and support services continue to work together to provide the highest level of care for each patient. I am thankful for their dedication to our trauma program.” said Jay Krishnaswamy, CEO of Doctors Medical Center of Modesto.

He continued, “This is a commitment that we are collectively making to the Central Valley so that all residents have the care they need and deserve. Serving our community in partnership with our EMS colleagues is central to our mission at Central Valley Doctors Health System.”

“An integral part of our mission, is the ability for our first responders to transport those in a critical trauma situation to verified trauma centers that can best serve their acute traumatic needs,” said Chad Braner, Director, Stanislaus County EMS Agency.

DMC was also designated as an ACS Surgical Quality Partner – Diamond. This is a recognition given upon being a part of the ACS Quality Programs. The quality programs are an important measure of a hospital’s surgical quality. The programs have helped improve quality of care, prevent complications, save lives, and reduce costs.

The American College of Cardiology recognized DMC as a top-performing Hospital for treatment of heart attack patients. DMC received the Platinum Performance Achievement Award – Chest Pain/MI Registry by demonstrated sustained achievement for two consecutive years (2022 and 2023) and performing at the highest level for specific performance measures.
