National Park Service staff at Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico on Friday were assessing damage caused by a flash flood that roared through Frijoles Canyon.
Water levels in the canyon during the flooding Thursday evening rose to 5.74 feet, high above normal flows measured at 1 feet, the park said in a release.
The monument’s visitor center and the Pueblo Loop Trail (up to Long House) were open Friday, but other trails and all creek crossings in Frijoles Canyon were to remain closed while crews assess damage to bridges, trails, trees, and other park resources. Backcountry camping in Bandelier’s canyons is also currently closed.
