In a startling tragedy aboard Celebrity Constellation, a 33-year-old female steward was found deceased in her stateroom on Sunday, July 19, 2026 as the ship docked in La Spezia, Italy.

According to Il Secolo XIX, the woman, only identified as KD and stated to be from Mauritius, was found by her partner and co-worker. Medical personnel aboard the ship were alerted and the ship’s officers also responded to the situation.

As the ship arrived in port and docked successfully at 7 a.m., Squadre Volanti officers from the Office of General Prevention and Public Aid of the Italian State Police boarded the 90,940-gross-ton ship to join the investigation. It is standard procedure for local authorities to be involved in such investigations.

The cause of death has not been officially announced or confirmed. According to the report, authorities also found some discrepancies between when the woman’s partner claimed to have been in the stateroom and time-stamped footage from the ship’s security cameras.

This does not yet indicate any foul play or suspicion of guilt. No charges have been filed at this time and there have been no arrests made.

The woman’s body was moved first to a local funeral home and then to the Sant’Andrea Hospital morgue, just one mile from the La Spezia cruise terminal, to be available for authorities to investigate. The funeral home is taking steps to contact the Consulate of the State of Mauritius and the woman’s family to make further arrangements as needed.

Celebrity Constellation has a crew complement of roughly 1,000 team members from dozens of countries. Crew contracts generally last several months, but there is no indication of when the woman joined the vessel or whether this was her first contract with Celebrity Cruises.

The cruise line has not made any official statement about the woman’s death. This is standard procedure when an investigation may be necessary, though Celebrity Cruises is likely to provide counseling services and other support to other crew members during this difficult time.

No Delay for the Ship

The Millennium-class ship does not appear to have been delayed departing from La Spezia as planned at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, and the ship returned to Civitavecchia (Rome) on Monday, July 20. This was the end of the 10-day one-way sailing that first departed Ravenna, Italy on July 10.

La Spezia was the final port visit for the ship, following several other destinations in Italy, Montenegro, and Croatia.

Celebrity Constellation has already departed Civitavecchia on her next sailing, an 11-day one-way itinerary back to Ravenna. The 2,170-passenger ship is not scheduled to call at La Spezia on the current voyage but will be back to the popular port on the Italian Riviera on August 9.

Crew Deaths Rare But Do Happen

It is a tragic fact that crew deaths do happen occasionally onboard cruise ships. The stress of the job, combined with a heavy workload and being away from close friends and family members for several months at a time, takes a very high emotional toll.

Cruise Hive has previously reported overboard incidents that are believed to be deliberate actions, such as the crew member overboard from Hebridean Princess in Scotland in June 2026.

Similar incidents have been recorded from ships of all sizes as well as many different cruise lines, including Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, AIDA Cruises, and others.

In other cases, violent altercations as well as accidents have led to the deaths of crew members while at sea or in ports of call.
