My favorite way to use my annual Capital One Venture X travel credit

One of my favorite perks on my Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is the annual $300 travel credit.

Every year on your cardholder anniversary, you receive a $300 credit for bookings made via the Capital One Travel portal. The perk nearly offsets the entire $395 annual fee on its own, and it’s incredibly easy to use.

I almost always prefer to book my travel directly as opposed to using a third party like a credit card issuer portal. But there are a few reasons to use Capital One’s travel portal (aside from the ability to use the annual credit on eligible bookings), including elevated earning rates, price prediction to help you book your trip at the best time and price protection when you use the prediction feature.

The biggest benefit to booking travel via Capital One, though, is access to the Premier and Lifestyle hotel collections.

Stacking my travel credit for even more value

I nearly always redeem my annual credit for hotel stays — specifically properties that are part of one of Capital One’s hotel collections.

For anyone unfamiliar, Capital One has two hotel collections, similar to The Edit by Chase and Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts.

Premier Collection hotels are luxury stays only available to Capital One Venture X and Capital One Venture X Business cardholders. The Lifestyle Collection features trendier stays (including some vacation rentals!) in popular cities, and they’re available to a wider range of Capital One cardholders.

Both collections give travelers access to benefits that help make their stay better.

These benefits are generally in line with what you get when you have elite status with major hotel chains — from early check-in to room upgrades when available — but typically at independent properties and boutique chains where it’s otherwise rare to get these benefits.

As a self-proclaimed “free agent” who doesn’t have elite status with any hotel, the benefits I get via the Premier and Lifestyle collections can be a game changer on a trip.

Not only do these benefits make my stays more enjoyable, they also save me real money.

Breakfast at a luxury property can easily cost more than $50 a day, and the experience credit you get with either collection can be put toward a nice dinner, drinks or even a spa treatment.

So when I use my annual $300 credit on a Premier or Lifestyle Collection property, I typically get a lot more than $300 in value during my stay.

Using my credit on a getaway to Vancouver

Here’s an example of the value I get from using my $300 credit on a Capital One collection hotel stay.

I recently took a three-night trip to Vancouver. My cardholder anniversary (when my credit resets each year) is in June, and I still had my 2025-2026 credit available when I booked my trip.

While Vancouver didn’t have any Premier Collection hotels available during my trip dates (though the multiple Fairmont properties in Vancouver are Premier Collection hotels), the Pan Pacific Vancouver was available and is part of the Lifestyle Collection.

It’s an iconic property centrally located in downtown Vancouver — the perfect home base for my first trip to the city.

My three-night stay cost $1,864.64.

After applying my Venture X’s $300 travel credit, I paid $1,564.64. Given my trip was in June and also right before the World Cup started, less than $525 per night is a solid deal.

Then the Lifestyle Collection perks kicked in.

Thanks to booking via the Lifestyle Collection, I received:

  • Club Pacific Room, which gave me access to the lounge and a room with a truly stunning view
  • Free daily breakfast in the lounge — which would have cost me $44 CAD per person daily (~$31) at the standard hotel buffet
  • Late checkout
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi (usually $5.25 CAD per day)
  • A $50 experience credit that I used on lunch one day

That means booking via the Capital One Lifestyle Collection saved me an additional $172 during my stay.

Bottom line

There are many ways to use the $300 travel credit you get annually with your Capital One Venture X, but this is the strategy I keep coming back to.

By booking Premier Collection or Lifestyle Collection hotels, I’m not just reducing the cost of my stay. I’m stacking the travel credit with complimentary breakfast, property credits, room upgrades and other perks that regularly save me even more money.

For me, that’s the easiest way to turn a $300 travel credit into an experience worth more.

Especially if you’re someone who doesn’t have hotel elite status, it’s a great way to indulge in those elite-like benefits.
