MENDOCINO, California—Trailborn Hotels & Resorts announced the opening of Hill House at Trailborn Mendocino, its first West Coast property and debut in Northern California.

Hill House is the first of two properties that will comprise Trailborn Mendocino, an 89-room destination that will be completed with the reopening of The Mendocino Hotel in early 2027 following an extensive renovation. Together, the two properties will form a community-centered campus.

“Hill House marks Trailborn’s West Coast debut and the beginning of a long-term commitment to Mendocino,” said Ben Weinberg, co-founder and co-CEO of Trailborn Hotels & Resorts. “Together with The Mendocino Hotel, we’re honored to help revitalize two beloved landmarks, elevating them for the future while preserving the character and sense of place that have made them meaningful to the community for generations.”

The second phase of Trailborn Mendocino, The Mendocino Hotel, will open in early 2027 with additional guestrooms, a new restaurant, and revitalized public spaces.

Property Details

A comprehensive transformation of the former Hill House Inn, the 44-room property preserves the character of a local landmark while introducing redesigned guest accommodations, enhanced amenities, and gathering places for both the local community and visiting guests. Overlooking Mendocino Village, the property offers access to coastal bluffs, redwood forests, and nearby wine country.

The project is designed in partnership with HBA San Francisco. Original architectural elements—including the millwork, original bar, and main staircase—have been preserved and reinterpreted alongside updated interiors, refreshed landscaping, and communal spaces that honor the property’s history. Public spaces center on hearth lounges, garden-facing seating, and indoor-outdoor flow designed for connection. A dedicated Cabot Cove Detective Library pays homage to Murder, She Wrote, which was filmed on the property.

“Our goal was to preserve what people have always loved about Hill House while thoughtfully reimagining it for a new generation of travelers,” said Mike Weiss. “From the guest rooms and public spaces to the amenities and programming, every aspect of the experience was designed to reflect the character, beauty, and spirit of Mendocino.”

Food & Beverage and More Offerings

Food and beverage offerings further celebrate the region. Hill House Wine & Grocer serves as a hub for local provisions, wines, and picnic fare, while Pizza Standard Time offers wood-fired pizzas, seasonal dishes, cocktails, and desserts for both guests and the community.

Hill House also introduces one of Mendocino’s largest and most versatile event venues, welcoming weddings, retreats, corporate offsites, wellness programming, and community celebrations across its indoor and outdoor spaces.

Programming centers around the culture and landscapes that define Mendocino—from live music and wine tastings to fireside moments, guided adventures, and signature picnics inspired by the region’s coastal beauty. Beyond the property, guests can explore sea caves by kayak, ride horseback along the coastline, discover nearby wineries, venture into ancient redwood forests, or participate in wellness experiences including forest bathing and guided movement practices.
