How Much Does a Medical Emergency Cost in Puerto Rico?

When planning a vacation, most of us think about the fun parts first: the beaches, the excursions, the food, and the memories we’re about to make. Travel insurance is often an afterthought. But when something unexpected happens far from home, having coverage can make all the difference.

Kirk’s Real-Life Claims Story

Kirk was enjoying his first time in San Juan (cue the Puerto Rico song), capital of Puerto Rico, when he stepped on something sharp while walking barefoot on the beach. At first, the cut on his foot seemed minor, and he didn’t think much of it.

But over the next few days, the pain and swelling became increasingly severe, making it difficult for him to walk.

Concerned about the worsening symptoms, Kirk visited a local clinic. Doctors quickly realized the infection was more serious than expected and referred him to a hospital for further testing and treatment. Blood work and x-rays revealed multiple abscesses in Kirk’s foot, requiring emergency surgery. Unfortunately, even after the procedure, his condition continued to deteriorate, and doctors determined a second surgery was necessary.

Due to the severity of the infection and the need for ongoing medical care, TuGo coordinated an air ambulance to transport him safely back to Canada for continued treatment. Thankfully, Kirk had purchased TuGo’s Emergency Medical Insurance before his trip.

Without coverage, the financial impact of this medical emergency would have been overwhelming. In total, travel insurance covered more than $139,000 CAD in medical expenses, including:

  • Hospital fees: $41,943.07
  • Doctors’ fees: $38,675.11
  • Pathology and radiology: $2,268.69
  • Air ambulance fees: $56,351.82

Stories like Kirk’s are an important reminder that medical emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time, even on a relaxing vacation. While no one wants to imagine needing emergency care abroad, having the right travel insurance coverage can provide peace of mind and financial protection when it matters most. Travel is meant to be enjoyed. Knowing you’re protected allows you to focus on what really matters: making memories with the people you love.

Safe travels,
Linnea
