French authorities in Bordeaux restricted more than 1,700 passengers and crew members to the cruise ship Ambition following an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness. The vessel, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, arrived in the western French port on Tuesday carrying 1,187 guests and 514 crew members. Most of the passengers on board the 14-night voyage are British and Irish nationals who had departed from Belfast and Liverpool earlier in the month.

The confinement was prompted by reports of a 92-year-old passenger’s death on Sunday and approximately 50 active cases of illness among those on board. While the cruise line noted that the deceased passenger had not displayed symptoms of gastrointestinal distress, regional health authorities suspended disembarkation as a precautionary measure to conduct medical testing. A specialized medical team was dispatched to the vessel to collect samples for analysis at Bordeaux University Hospital. Initial data from the cruise line indicated that the frequency of illness increased shortly after the ship’s stop in Liverpool on May 9.

French health officials eventually confirmed that the symptoms were caused by norovirus, a highly contagious viral gastroenteritis that often spreads in confined environments. They explicitly ruled out any connection to a separate hantavirus outbreak that had recently affected a different vessel in international waters. In response to the situation, Ambassador Cruise Line implemented enhanced sanitation protocols, including intensified cleaning of public areas and assisted service in dining venues. All shore excursions in Bordeaux were initially canceled and refunded, and medical consultations for affected individuals were provided free of charge. By Wednesday evening, health authorities granted the ship clearance to resume normal operations after the risk was assessed, allowing passengers to disembark and continue their itinerary to Spain.
