Key Aspects:
- Robert Downey Jr. has officially been named as the godfather for the upcoming Disney Adventure.
- The actor, who played Iron Man, has natural connections to the Marvel-themed entertainment onboard.
- Disney Adventure’s maiden voyage is set for March 10, 2026.
One of the biggest stars in the world is stepping up to the plate to welcome one of the world’s most anticipated cruise ships.
On February 23, 2026, Disney Cruise Line officially named Robert Downey Jr. as the godparent to Disney Adventure, which will be the biggest ship to join the fleet and the first DCL ship built specifically for the Asian market.
Downey’s role as the backbone of the Marvel universe (in more ways than one) makes him a natural fit to welcome Disney’s newest addition.
“Our new ship continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea, and we are honored that Robert Downey Jr., who has guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories, is the official godparent for the Disney Adventure,” said Josh D’Amaro, incoming Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company.
The Academy Award-winning actor also voiced his own excitement at being the one to christen the 208,000-gross ton new-build.
“It’s impossible to describe the majesty of the Adventure, and to be its godparent is an honor. As the largest ship in the Disney fleet, a gargantuan blessing must be bestowed … I’ll do my darndest,” Downey said.

A Heroic Connection
Downey has been at the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade and was named a Disney Legend in 2019.
Notably, Downey played Iron Man / Tony Stark for 11 years, starring in movies like “Avengers: Endgame,” which earned more than $2.79 billion at the global box office.
He will also be returning for Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in “Avengers: Doomsday,” where Downey will switch from playing the hero to portraying one of the franchise’s most iconic villains (Doctor Doom).
Speaking to the Marvel connection, the new 6,700-guest ship will debut the first-ever Marvel Landing, which will feature three adrenaline-filled attractions.
The first ride is the Ironcycle Test Run, which as Cruise Hive previously reported, is the longest roller coaster at sea and is inspired by “Iron Man.”
The next two attractions are Pym Quantum Racers, which is an homage to “Ant-Man and The Wasp” and Groot Galaxy Spin, which is based on “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
Guests will also be able to meet Marvel characters in the flesh during their sailing, with potential appearances from Iron Man.
When Will Disney Adventure Set Sail?
After being delayed by several months, Disney Adventure is almost ready to begin her career at sea.
The new ship was officially delivered to Disney in December 2025 and already made a brief appearance in Port Canaveral, Florida, during her journey to Asia.
As of the time of this publication, the new ship has made it to East Asia and is sailing in the direction of Tokyo, Japan. However, her homeport will be Singapore, where she will operate 3- to 4-night cruises to nowhere – starting with a 3-night maiden voyage scheduled for March 10, 2026.
The date of the christening has not been announced yet, but it will likely happen in the days just before the inaugural cruise.
