Today we’re journeying from Nairobi to the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, the country’s flagship wildlife destination and one of the best places in the world to go on safari… or so we’re told.

I want to find out if the Masai Mara is worth the hype.

Join me as I spend 2 days exploring the Masai Mara, searching for the famous Big Five.

  1. Hello Ella, thank you for the amazing video on Massai Mara Safari. I'm going there end of the month. I love the cramp n camera platform you used which I think is terrific. Can you tell me what brand n model are they so that I can install my camera on the rail as you did. Thank you🙏

  2. This has got to be the best video I've watched so far of Maasai Mara. Good story telling and quite detailed. Felt like I was literally part of the Safari. Gideon is sure the guide to look for! You'vespoken highly of him and now i dont want anyone else 😅. The company by logo on the van is Meektrail safaris right? I've seen quite good reviews about them. I definitely have to do this.

  3. We saw Nishapei and her 4 cubs in August 2024. By then the cubs were a year old. She now is so famous that two vehicles of Rangers stay with the all the time to protect them from tourists and animals. There had to be 40 to 50 vehicles there. We were very lucky in that when she and the cubs decided to hunt, the direction they took led them right past our vehicle.

It’s so tough for cheetahs. They have to hunt during the day because their night vision isn’t great. They have to stay in open areas to protect themselves from lions and leopards who are much bigger. And as the video shows they often quickly lose their kills to hyenas or other predators so they have to eat as quickly as they can. We also saw Nora, another cheetah she saw in this video (I think) and Neema, who she saw on her video in the Mara North conservancy.

The saddest thing about this video, made only two-plus years ago, is that she saw the Rongai Pride and the 5 males who controlled them, the Black Rock Boys. Now, only two of the BRB remain alive; the other three have been killed by herders, including Lorkulop, probably the most famous lion in the world at the time, who was deliberately run over by a jeep and then stabbed with spears.

As much as I love Masaii Mara, I will never return after I learned of that. This year we are going to Tanzania.
